Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are vital tools used in cases of sudden cardiac arrest. When it comes to sudden cardiac arrest incidents, time is of the essence, which is why defibrillators are made so widely available and designed to be used by untrained bystanders. But did you know that the effectiveness of an AED depends on the condition of the defibrillator pads?
Defibrillator pads come with an expiration date so it’s crucial to understand why they expire and how you can ensure your AED is always ready for use in an emergency.
Defibrillator pads (or electrode pads) are a critical component of any AED. Electrode pads not only deliver the shock to the patient from the defibrillator, but they also contain sensors to detect electrical activity in the heart to assess whether a shock is needed. It will then transmit the shock if it determines that it’s necessary. In addition, the adhesive gel on the pads ensures they stick firmly to the patient’s skin, allowing the electrical current to pass through effectively.
Without functioning defibrillator pads, an AED is unable to detect heart rhythms or deliver a life-saving shock. As a result, maintaining your pads and ensuring they haven’t passed their expiry data will ensure the device performs as it should in a cardiac emergency.
Defibrillator pads are usually in a sealed packet and, for most defibrillators, are already attached ready for use. Once they have been opened and used, they must be disposed of and replaced. The main reason is that once the pads have been used the adhesive gel loses its stickiness.
However, there are several other factors that can contribute to the expiration of defibrillator pads, even if they haven’t already been used. Most defibrillator pads have a lifespan of up to two years. The following factors can contribute to their expiry:
The pads use a conductive gel to ensure strong adhesion to the skin, allowing the defibrillator to deliver an effective shock. Over time, the gel can degrade or dry out which reduces its ability to adhere properly and affect’s it’s performance.
The materials used in the pads, particularly the conductive elements and protective backing, can degrade over time, leading to reduced efficiency or potential malfunctions when the defibrillator is in use.
Medical technology advances all the time and AEDs, and their components are regularly updated so they adhere to the latest standards and regulations. Expiration dates ensure that old pads are replaced with newer versions and mean that your defibrillator stays in line with the most up-to-date regulations.
Expired pads could mean the difference between life and death in an emergency.
To ensure your defibrillator is always in working order, we recommend regular maintenance and checks so you can be confident that it will work effectively when needed.
Keep track of when your AED pads and batteries are due for replacement. Most defibrillators have a built-in reminder system, but manual checks should also be part of your routine.
Having a spare set of pads with your defibrillator alongside the pads that are either attached or ready to be used means you can be confident you have pads that will work in an emergency.
We stock a wide range of defibrillator replacement pads so please browse our range if you’re looking for spare pads.
Assign someone in your workplace, school or community centre to inspect AEDs regularly. Ensure they check expiry dates, battery levels and overall device condition.
If you want to be sure that your defibrillator is checked regularly you can book an annual maintenance check or 6-8 weekly guardian check, so [MW1] you have peace of mind that the defibrillator is going to work when needed.
