Why do you need to replace your defibrillator pads?
Defibrillator pads are manufactured using a range of components that can deteriorate over time. In addition, once the pads have been used, they can no longer be used again and will need to be replaced.
The pads contain a conductive gel that enables the electrical shock to pass from the defibrillator to the patient. This gel deteriorates over time which reduces adhesion and can affect performance during an emergency.
As a result, replacement pads should be purchased:
- Before the expiry date
- Immediately after any rescue
- If the packaging becomes damaged
- If the pads have been exposed to unsuitable storage conditions
Most AEDs perform regular self-checks so will usually alert you if there is a problem but we recommend regularly checking your AED to ensure it's rescue ready.
