History of defibrillator and types
It was in the year 1899 that defibrillator was used for the first time. Since then, it has evolved to be considered as life saving machines. It tops arrhythmia and revives the heart. It also depolarises. It enables sinus rhythm to get reestablished and allow heart to return to normal pace. These devices are designed to provide the heart with electric shocks, either externally or internally. Some can even diagnose the rhythm of the heart! Such devices are used mostly for heart attack (cardiac arrest) and in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. You can find them in different defibrillator types. Some are designed to be used by people having less or no medical knowledge and others by medical professionals. Those having in-depth medical knowledge can use manual external devices. You can find the latter types being used at ambulances and hospitals. They may have electrocardiogram readers or be used with them.
Know the types of defibrillator in detail
The manual defibrillator internal type is said to be used on the heart directly as well as for surgical operation. Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) and paramedics use semi-automatic types. These are quite similar to that of the automatic defibrillator, external types. The only difference is that it features manual override and has an ECG screen. ICD (Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator) type is quite similar to that of pacemakers. They can monitor and read heart shock and rhythms. Some feature a ring magnet that can be disabled by users if it shocks inappropriately or constantly. Wearable cardiac type is worn just like any vest. AEDs (Automated external) type is used mainly in emergency conditions where chances of someone having indepth medical knowledge are very less. You can find AEDs available at public places especially those that are frequented by high risk persons.
AEDs are designed for public use. Being portable they can be carried out effortlessly and quickly. They are created to treat two types of arrhythmia, namely, ventricular fibrillation and pulse less ventricular tachycardia. The latter type is termed to be a condition where heart pumps excessively fast to enable blood circulation. On the other hand, Ventricular fibrillation is a condition where chaotic electrical activity prevents pumping of blood by the heart. Automated External defibrillator can determine heart rhythm in just 10-20 seconds. AED is also part of many courses like basic life-support CPR, first responder and first aid classes. There can be several incidents involving cardiac arrest causing brain damage or even death without using AEDs.
