An automated external defibrillator (AED defib) is a device that can deliver an electric shock to someone who is experiencing a sudden cardiac arrest, this shock can restore a regular heart rhythm and save the person’s life. AED’s require no training to use and can be found in many public places such as schools, offices, shops, local councils etc.
But how do you choose which is the best AED defib for you and your company? There are many factors to consider, such as:
AED’s are a costly investment, and whilst you can’t put a price on saving a life, depending on the make and model you may have to spend more both upfront and in the long run. Every AED model can vary depending on the features and accessories, which is why it is important to do your research before purchasing or speak to a member of our team. It is also important to remember that AED’s require maintenance.
They require regular checkups to ensure the battery and pads are still in date and working. However, if the pads and/or batteries are expired, they will need to be replaced, depending on the make and model expiry dates can vary between 18 months to 5 years. You want to choose an AED that has low maintenance costs and high quality.
Each AED has different features and functions, such as, CPR feedback, a child switch, self-testing, voice prompts, visual indicators and warranty etc. You want to choose an AED that suits you and your company’s needs and preferences. For example, if your company is multi-lingual you will require an AED that can change languages at the push of a button. Or if you or your employees lack training in CPR you may want an AED defib device with CPR feedback.
The size and location of your workplace. Accessibility is key when it comes to installing your AED, the size and location of your workplace is a key factor in where you install your AED and how many you install. For example, if you have a large building; you may need more than one AED installed in convenient locations, evenly spread out, so no matter where you are in the building, they are quick and easy to access. However, if you work in a small building but are located in a busy area, e.g. a business park, it may be worth installing your AED in an outdoor cabinet so it is accessible to the public if needed.
Choosing the right AED for you and your company can seem like a daunting and unnecessary task, but it can be a rewarding one. By investing in an AED you are not only protecting your employees and customers, but also saving lives.
